• David Matlin

    Chief Executive Officer

    David Matlin is co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of MatlinPatterson, and has overall responsibility for MatlinPatterson’s distressed credit strategies. He is also Chief Executive Officer of MatlinPatterson Asset Management and Matlin & Partners Acquistion Corporation. Prior to forming MatlinPatterson in 2002, Mr. Matlin was a Managing Director at Credit Suisse, and head of the Credit Suisse Distressed Securities Group since its inception in 1994. Mr. Matlin was also a Managing Director and a founding partner of Merrion Group, L.P., a successor to Scully Brothers & Foss L.P. (1988-1994). He began his career as a securities analyst at Halcyon Investments (1986-1988). Mr. Matlin holds a JD from the Law School of the University of California at Los Angeles (1986) and a BS in Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania (1983).

    Mr. Matlin serves on the Boards of Directors of portfolio companies Flagstar Bank, CalAtlantic Group, Inc and Matlin &Partners Acquisition Corporation. Mr. Matlin serves on the Investment Committee of MatlinPatterson Global Advisers.

  • Peter Schoels

    Managing Partner and Portfolio Manager – Control and Illiquid Investments

    Peter Schoels is Managing Partner of MatlinPatterson and is the Portfolio Manager of MatlinPatterson’s control and illiquid investments. Prior to joining MatlinPatterson at inception in July 2002, Mr. Schoels was a Vice President of Credit Suisse’s Global Distressed Securities Group investing in North America, Latin America, Western and Eastern Europe (2001-2002). Prior to joining Credit Suisse, Mr. Schoels was a Director of Finance and Strategy of Itim Group Plc (2000-2001). Previously, Mr. Schoels was Manager of Mergers and Acquisitions for Ispat International NV, now ArcelorMittal, which specialized in buying distressed steel assets globally (1998-2000). Mr. Schoels holds an MBA from U.B.I. in Brussels, Belgium (1998), and a BA in International Business from Eckerd College, St. Petersburg, Florida (1996).

    Mr. Schoels serves on the Boards of Directors of portfolio companies Flagstar Bank, CalAtlantic Group, Inc., Crescent Communities and Matlin & Partners Acquisition Corporation. Mr. Schoels serves on the Investment Committee of MatlinPatterson Global Advisers.

  • Michael Lipsky

    Partner and Portfolio Manager – Liquid Investments

    Michael Lipsky is a Partner and Portfolio Manager of MatlinPatterson’s liquid distressed business. Mr. Lipsky joined MatlinPatterson in March 2011. Prior to joining MatlinPatterson, Mr. Lipsky was a Managing Director at BlackRock, Inc. where he was a portfolio manager for distressed investments in the R3 Capital fund and the Value Credit Partners fund. Prior to joining BlackRock in 2009, Mr. Lipsky was a Senior Partner and head of Distressed Products for R3 Capital Partners. He held a similar role with Lehman Brothers’ Global Principal Strategies team from 2007 to 2008. Earlier, he spent seven years with Deutsche Bank Securities, Inc. and was most recently a Managing Director in the Global Distressed Products group. From 1996 to 2000, Mr. Lipsky was an Associate in the Fixed Income Currencies and Commodities Group at Goldman Sachs & Co. Mr. Lipsky holds an MBA, with honors, from Columbia Business School (1996) and a BA degree from the University of Pennsylvania (1992).

  • Gregory Ethridge

    Senior Partner

    Greg Ethridge is a Senior Partner and investment professional of MatlinPatterson and President of Matlin & Partners Acquisition Corporation. Prior to joining MatlinPatterson in January 2009, Mr. Ethridge was a principal in the Recapitalization and Restructuring group at Broadpoint Capital, Inc. where he moved his team from Imperial Capital (2008-2009). Mr. Ethridge was a founding member of the corporate finance advisory practice for Imperial Capital LLC in New York (2006-2008). Prior to Imperial Capital, Mr. Ethridge was a principal investor at Parallel Investment Partners LP (formerly part of Saunders, Karp and Megrue) executing recapitalizations, buyouts and growth capital investments for middle market companies (2005-2006). Previously, Mr. Ethridge was an associate in the Recapitalization and Restructuring Group at Jefferies and Company, Inc. (2001-2005) where he executed corporate restructurings and leveraged finance transactions and was a crisis manager at Conway, Del Genio, Gries & Co. in New York (2000-2001). Mr. Ethridge holds a BBA and a Master in Accounting from The University of Texas at Austin (2000).

    Mr. Ethridge serves on the Boards of Directors of Advantix Systems, FXI Holding and Crescent Communities and is an observer on the board of CalAtlantic Group, Inc. Mr. Ethridge serves on the Investment Committee of MatlinPatterson Global Advisers.

  • Chris Pechock

    Partner and Chairman of Investment Committee

    Christopher Pechock is a Partner, investment professional and Chairman of the Investment Committee of MatlinPatterson. Prior to joining MatlinPatterson at inception in July 2002, Mr. Pechock was a member of Credit Suisse’s Global Distressed Securities Group (1999-2002). Prior to joining Credit Suisse, Mr. Pechock was a Portfolio Manager and Research Analyst in distressed securities at Turnberry Capital Management, L.P. (1997-1999), a Portfolio Manager in distressed securities and special situations at Eos Partners, L.P. (1996-1997), a Vice President and high yield analyst at PaineWebber Inc. (1993-1996) and an analyst in corporate finance and risk arbitrage at Wertheim Schroder & Co., Incorporated (1987-1991). Mr. Pechock holds an MBA from the Columbia University Graduate School of Business (1993) and a BA in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania (1987).

    Mr. Pechock serves on the Board of Directors of Fund III portfolio company Oceanus LLC.

  • James McCartney

    Partner

    James McCartney is a Partner and fixed income trader of MatlinPatterson. Prior to joining MatlinPatterson at inception in July 2002, Mr. McCartney was a member of Credit Suisse’s Global Distressed Securities Group (1999-2002). Prior to joining Credit Suisse, Mr. McCartney held various financial reporting positions at Credit Suisse First Boston, Smith Barney Inc. and Kidder, Peabody & Company. Mr. McCartney holds a BBA in Management from Adelphi University (1986).

    Partner

    David Austen is a Partner and investment professional for MatlinPatterson Global Advisers. Prior to joining MatlinPatterson, Mr. Austen was a Managing Director and distressed trader at Nomura Securities (2009-2015). Prior to joining Nomura, Mr. Austen held various credit-related positions as a Senior Managing Director at Bear Stearns where he was most recently the Co-Head of Fixed Income Sales and Credit Trading in London (2001-2008). Mr. Austen began his career in trading at PNC Bank in Pittsburgh. Mr. Austen holds an MBA from the Tepper School of Business (2001) and a BS from the University of Richmond (1996).

  • Alex DeFelice

    Principal

    Alex DeFelice is a Principal and investment professional of MatlinPatterson. Prior to joining MatlinPatterson in July 2014, Mr. DeFelice was a Director at BlackRock where he served as a senior analyst on the Special Situations Portfolio team focusing on distressed and special situations for both hedge funds including R3 Capital and Value Credit Partners and mutual funds managed across the Leverage Finance platform. Prior to joining BlackRock in 2009, Mr. DeFelice was head of Distressed Research at R3 Capital Partners and a Vice President at a predecessor entity within Lehman Brothers known as the Global Principal Strategies group beginning in 2006. Mr. DeFelice began his career at UBS Warburg working as an Analyst in the Global Restructuring Group (2001-2002) and then as an Associate at financial restructuring advisory firm, Chanin Capital Partners (2003-2006). Mr. DeFelice holds a BS in Economics from Duke University (2001).

  • Nathan Brawn

    Principal

    Nathan Brawn is a Principal and investment professional of MatlinPatterson and Chief Operating Officer of Matlin & Partners Acquisition Corporation. Prior to joining MatlinPatterson in March 2009, Mr. Brawn was an Analyst and Associate in the Recapitalization and Restructuring group of Jefferies & Company, Inc. focused on in-court and out-of-court transactions across the automotive, building products, metals and mining, consumer retail and telecommunications industries (2006-2009). Mr. Brawn holds a BS in Business Administration from Babson College (2006).

    Mr. Brawn serves on the Boards of Directors of portfolio companies Renewable Biofuels, Stone Mountain Resources and FXI Holding.

  • Stephan Walker

    Vice President

    Stephan Walker is a Vice President and investment professional of MatlinPatterson. Prior to joining MatlinPatterson in September 2013, Mr. Walker was a credit analyst working in the long/short credit strategy within Hutchin Hill Capital, LLC, focused on the retail, mortgage insurance, and basic materials sectors (2010-2013). Prior to Hutchin Hill, Mr. Walker was a credit desk analyst at the Royal Bank of Scotland, covering the telecom, chemicals and forest product sectors (2007-2010). Mr. Walker holds a BS in Finance and General Accounting from the Stern School of Business at New York University (2007).

    Matt Midera is a Vice President and investment professional of MatlinPatterson. Prior to joining MatlinPatterson in September 2016, Mr. Midera was a Vice President at Nomura Securities where he served as a senior analyst in the Corporate Credit & Special Situations Group, focused on distressed and special situations. Prior to joining Nomura in 2013, Mr. Midera was previously an investment professional at Halcyon Asset Management and Goldman Sachs Principal Strategies. Mr. Midera began his career at Citigroup working as an Analyst in the Mergers & Acquisitions Department. Mr. Midera holds a BS in Finance from Lehigh University (2008).

  • Oliver Goddard

    Associate

    Oliver Goddard is an Associate and Investment professional of MatlinPatterson. Prior to joining MatlinPatterson in December 2013, Mr. Goddard was an Associate in the Global Restructuring Group of Royal Bank of Scotland plc, focused on managing cross-border and international restructurings in the Shipping and Financial Institutions sectors (2010-2013). Mr. Goddard holds a 1st Class BSc in Engineering and Finance from the University of Warwick (2010).
